battery life, closing apps

I have an HTC Evo. As everyone's probably noticed, battery life on
this device is ridiculous. I installed Advanced Task Killer, but I see
that many apps keep opening when I don't want them to. (Some of them
are apps I've never used.)

How can I prevent apps from opening unless I am actually using them?
What else can I do to extend battery life?

Try Startup Manager. It'll remove them from the the initial boot
process, which means they won't try to "wake up" to see if there's
anything to do unless you start them yourself.

It worked pretty good on my Moment, before I flashed a custom ROM and
didn't need it anymore.

I can tell you from experience though... if you are using any IM
clients, you aren't likely to ever have good battery life...

useless). If I need to use Task Killer to turn off Messages, that's
fine, as long as the other apps are quitting completely.

Is it located someplace on the phone that isn't obvious? Is Startup
Manager an app that I need to download from the Android Market?

the task.. it just shuts them down for that moment... They wake up a
few minutes later and look for something to do again.

Startup Manager is a free app available in the Android Market. Sorry,
I should have actually told you where to find it. :)

I found it. Thanks, Ryan. Now I get to find out which apps are
optional, and which ones are necessary, when the durn thang goes cold.

I found that the combination of TASK KILLER and STARTUP CLEANER did
not really help. I am still looking for task killers that really turn
things off and keep them off till I want to use them again.

Hopefully I will find a good app killer soon.

How handy are you? There are several applications that constantly
"wake up" and do things that I never really use that came preloaded by
Sprint on the phone. One of the first things I learned to do was "root"
the phone so I could delete the apps that I will never use... such as
Moxier Mail, Sprint TV, etc.

Eventually, there will be custom ROMs available for the EVO, as there
are for my moment. My battery life has increased from 8-10 hours out of
the box, to 18-20 hours with moderate use since I applied a custom ROM.
